Fiat Doblo, 2010
The new Fiat that is all about space. A space to be shared with family and friends, a liveable space for travelling and socialising, for whoever chooses the Fiat Dobl as a partner for leisure or work.
It was designed with practicality and comfort in mind to make the best of space on board and accommodate up to seven occupants. An authentic "family space" vehicle that can rely on top-class safety, cost-effective running and environment-friendliness.
Compared to the previous version, of which approximately one million units were sold in all its variants, the new Fiat Dobl has been revamped throughout with a new style, new engines and new technical features. These aspects make the new Fiat Dobl the best-in-class in terms of capaciousness and emission reduction. These results were achieved by a new platform, more room for passengers (with a wheelbase of 2755 mm, it is the longest in its segment), a roomy 790 litre boot (3200 litres with the seats folded down), lower CO2 emissions (129 g/km with the 1.3 Multijet 90 HP engine, the lowest in its category), an innovative Bi-link suspension layout for extra comfort, standard safety equipment and highly modular interiors with folding, reclining seats.
Style and comfort
Created by Centro Stile Fiat, the innovative design of the new Fiat Dobl combines original forms and large dimensions in a very balanced manner to confer the impression of a robust, solid vehicle: 439 cm long, 183 cm wide and 184 cm high (189 cm with roof bars), it has a 276 cm wheelbase (best-in-class in its category).
The distinctive front end expresses a strong, clear-cut personality and is well balanced with the total weight. Prominent features are the large, enveloping headlights, the big rounded hood which forms two side "muscles" on the mudguards (this style element is recalled and emphasised on the rear wheel arches), a broad central "mouth" with a logo standing out in central position, seamless hood and bumpers. An ample windscreen with black pillars completes the newly styled front end for a brighter passenger compartment and better visibility, further enhanced by the flat blade wipers with a low, aerodynamic profile that minimises noise and interference caused by air turbulence in addition to more efficient cleaning.
From the side, the Fiat Dobl is typified by an essential lines seamlessly spanning along the bottom from the front to the rear wheel arch which give it strength and dynamism. Side mouldings are standard on all versions. The side is accented by shiny black door pillars, highly functional, compact wing mirrors, and a flushed side door sliding guide integrated in the body, typical of MPVs. The large side windows confer a feeling of brightness and ample interior space. The big sliding side doors making getting in and out easier. They are large enough to accommodate rear electric windows opening the entire surface of the window for the first time in its segment.
The generously-sized rear section immediately suggests a large loading volume and amount of available space. Distinctive and modern, the swing tailgate of the new Fiat Dobl has a sleek style and a large window. The Fiat logo is set in the middle, like a small jewel stone. A unique shiny black fascia splits the tailgate in two: the upper glass part and the lower metal part.
The rear lights are arranged vertically and have a crystal clear transparent part which puts the accent on brightness. Finally, the enveloping bumpers merge into the rear wheel arches on the side and into the tailgate on the upper part without protruding.
The interiors have also been designed with functionality in mind to create appealing, welcoming environments with different combination of colours, materials and trims. The new Fiat Dobl offers many smart solutions for making the best use of on-board space, such as an array of storage compartments and flexible interiors, with up to seven seats, to satisfy the needs of those who wants to enjoy their Fiat Dobl with family and friends. Also the dashboard and the handy roof shelf are designed to ensure top level ergonomics and driving comfort.
Finally, the boot is the largest in its class (from 790 to 3200 litres with the seats folded) and, according to version, may be equipped with a parcel shelf adjustable to two heights to configure the boot as needed. Specifically, up to 70 kg can be loaded on the parcel shelf set to the lower position.
Environment and economy
The Fiat Dobl will be launched with four engines with 5 or 6 speed gearboxes, all designed and made by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies:
* 1.3 Multijet II 16v - 90 HP (Euro 4);
* 1.6 Multijet 16v - 105 HP (Euro 5);
* 2.0 Multijet 16v - 135 HP (Euro 5);
* 1.4 16v - 95 HP (Euro 5).
Furthermore, all engines of the new Fiat are fitted with the Start&Stop and a DPF anti-particulate filter (diesel engines only) as standard. The Start&Stop system temporarily stops the engine when stopped (e.g. at traffic lights) and then restarts it.
The Fiat Dobl is yet another step forward in sustainable transport by Fiat, once more ahead of the EEC regulation requiring new cars to comply with Euro 5 specifications only from 1 January 2011.
A Natural Power fitted with the new 1.4 16v - 115 HP dual fuel (petrol/methane) engine and a new diesel with robotized Dualogic gearbox will be available soon. Staying on the environmental theme, the new Fiat Dobl is fitted with an innovative feature, called eco:Drive. Using the USB port, this software program analyses driving style and helps cut fuel consumption and emissions.
1.3 Multijet 16v - 90 HP (Euro 4)
Developed and made by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies, the 1.3 Multijet II - 90 HP belongs to the second generation of Multijet engines. These engines incorporate new common rail injectors with a balanced hydraulic servo-valve to more accurately control the amount of fuel injected into the combustion chamber, faster and more flexibly than in the past. This means more accurate combustion with benefits for consumption, emissions, NVH and driveability.
The new Common Rail injector implements IRS (Injection Rate Shaping) for modulating the fuel injection rate. This strategy allows fuel saving and reduced CO2 on a standard cycle by approximately 2%, with a NOx reduction of up to 30%.
Second generation Multijet engines are the most modern evolution of Common Rail technology. After the JTD (1997) and first generation Multijet (2003), the Multijet II secures yet another engineering triumph for Fiat Group Automobiles, anticipating future standards.
The Fiat Dobl's new 1.3 Multijet II - 90 HP is fitted with a variable geometry turbocharger for very wide usage range: with respect to its predecessor, the maximum torque of 200 Nm (+ 25%) is delivered at only 1500 rpm to ensure rapid pickup. The result is top-in-class fuel saving: only 4.9 litres for 100 km in combined cycle and a CO2 emission level of only 129 g/km. At the same time, the performance of the new Fiat Dobl engine is excellent: 156 km/h top speed and 15 seconds from 0 to100 km/h.
1.6 Multijet - 105 HP (Euro 5)
Compared to the tried and tested 1.9 JTDM 120 HP, the 1.6 Multijet is a significant step forward with improved performance, comfort, emissions and running costs in addition to considerable benefits: torque is higher by nearly 25% with equal power (1500 rpm). All this comes with much improved driveability, due above all to useful torque values delivered at low engine speeds. These aims were achieved by totally optimising combustion, which exploits the potential of the new injectors to the full.
Fitted with an electronically-controlled fixed geometry turbocharger, the 1.6 Multijet delivers an excellent absolute torque, which is even more appreciable considering the capacity of the engine: 290 Nm puts it right at the top of the performance charts for engines of 1.8 litres and smaller. If we then consider specific torque (i.e. divided by the cubic capacity) the 1.6 is the highest performing engine in the 200 HP category, with the sole exception of "supersport" engines. That is not all. Considering that the maximum torque (290 Nm) is delivered at just 1500 rpm, the revolutionary nature of the 1.6 Multijet with respect to present-day diesel engines is even more obvious: no other - not even a next-gen engine - can deliver such high torque with such low revs. With this equipment, the new Fiat Dobl has low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption (138 g/km and 5.2 litres/100 km on the combined cycle, respectively), top speed of 164 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.4 seconds.
Furthermore, the 1.6 Multijet needs less frequent servicing. As a result of the high quality level and the efforts spent on each component to further improve strength and efficiency, the 1.6 Multijet only needs one service every 35,000 km for perfect engine and vehicle efficiency. The results in terms of running cost reductions are evident: for example, this means one service less for distances of 90,000 km or 100,000 km, or a saving of scheduled servicing costs of 25%.
Finally, with an eye to environmental friendliness, the engine is Euro 5 approved and equipped with DPF and Start&Stop as standard. Furthermore, 1.6 Multijet - 105 HP implements state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment technologies, such as a Close Coupled Diesel Particulate Filter and a built-in EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system to improve control of gas temperature and flow while guaranteeing lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption at the same time.
2.0 Multijet - 135 HP (Euro 5)
The 2.0 Multijet - 135 HP Euro 5 is the natural evolution of the tried and tested 1.9 Multijet - 120 HP from the point of view of performance (power +12% and torque +45% at 1500 rpm) and pollutant emissions (it is Euro 5 directive compliant). In particular, with a maximum torque of 320 Nm, it is best-in-class. These features translate into an outstanding driving experience and excellent performance (top speed of 179 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds) with limited fuel consumption and CO2 emissions: 5.7 litres/100 km and 150 g/km on the combined cycle.
Various technical interventions were implemented on the engine to increase performance, engine torque at low speeds and reduce noise and vibrations. The 2.0 Multijet - 135 HP is supercharged by an electronically-controlled fixed geometry turbocharger which improves power and delivers high torque even at low engine speeds.
Furthermore, the emission control system includes an electrically-activated EGR valve, managed directly by the engine management system, the use of an exhaust gas recirculation cooling system and the same close coupled catalytic converter as the 1.6. Finally, the reliability of the 2.0 Multijet - 135 HP is the result of many specific tests carried out on the engine and on the single components throughout development.
1.4 16v - 95 HP (Euro 5)
Euro 5 compliant with low fuel consumption, the 1.4 16v - 95 HP engine is the ideal solution for urban use. The torque curve is very gradual from 1500 to 4000 rpm making it extremely flexible, for pleasantly smooth running and low fuel consumption (7.2 l/100 km on the mixed cycle).
Start&Stop system and Gear Shift Indicator
With respect for the environment and fuel economy still in mind, the new model implements a system called Start&Stop. Standard on all engines, this device temporarily stops the engine and restarts it to reduce fuel consumption and noise levels in the passenger compartment when activated. In these situations, which are typical of heavy traffic in urban areas and when stopped at traffic lights, when the control strategy permits, the system automatically cuts out the engine in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15% for an urban route and by 3.5 to 4% over an NEDC-type cycle.
Finally, the Gear Shift Indicator (GSI) combined with the Start&Stop system is a "co-pilot" that discreetly suggests when to shift gear, leading to more efficient use of the engine in terms of fuel consumption. By means of a signal on the instrument panel, the GSI may suggest shifting up a gear to make the engine burn a leaner mixture or shift down to make best use of the available torque.
The eco:Drive system
An innovative software program developed with Microsoft, called eco:Drive, is available to new Fiat Dobl drivers. The system uses the USB port to analyse the driving style helping the driver to optimise behaviour in terms of consumption and hence emissions.
Specifically, eco:Drive gathers information on vehicle efficiency and your driving styles as you drive. All data is sent through the USB port of the Blue&Me infotainment system to a standard USB key, which can then be read on a computer. You can then take a careful look at fuel consumption and emissions for each trip (and create your own eco:Index) and get tips on how to achieve a more eco-friendly driving style. You can actually improve your score by progressing through a series of tutorials: motorists who are keen on becoming more eco-responsible drivers can expect a 15% improvement in their driving style, which means cutting CO2 emissions by 15% and an annual fuel saving of 120 to 200 Euros.
Specifically for the eco:Drive system, the Fiat brand was recently nominated "Green Champion" by the Green Organisation, a group devoted to acknowledging, rewarding and promoting best environmental practices worldwide.
Safety
The Fiat Dobl is designed and built to achieve the highest levels of safety. It is the result of the many devices offered (standard or optional according to market or outfit) starting from those devoted to passive safety which equip the entire range: front airbags and next-generation side bags, which are larger in size with respect to traditional side bags for protecting both the head and the chest.
The road holding of the new Fiat Dobl is constant and predictable through the adoption of electronic dynamic control systems for braking and steering. There is the ABS system with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) and, above all, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) with Hill Holder to assist starting uphill (this is the only vehicle in its segment to have this function available across all engines).
Additionally, the new model has all the dynamic and comfort features that allow users to embark comfortably and safely on any journey. There is a powerful and effective braking system, tyres designed specifically for maximum comfort and safety, and the innovative suspension structure: independent-wheel McPherson type at the front and independent-wheel Bi-link with anti-roll bar at the rear. These are a state-of-the-art solution for improving comfort, road-holding and driveability, increasing roominess and on board space and lowering the loading threshold.
Furthermore, the Fiat Dobl is leader in insurance crash test ratings, which measure the extent of potential damage to a vehicle consequent to low speed collisions. In many European markets (first and foremost Germany and the UK), insurance premiums vary according to the rating attributed to the vehicle by insurance associations. The evaluation is based on the average costs for repairs and on the statistic frequency of accidents. This is an obvious advantage even when this does not mean paying smaller insurance premiums: anywhere in the world and for all customers, a lower damage potential means cheaper repair costs and is the result of clever design implemented to reduce wrecking and improving part disassembly and reassembly of parts.
The Fiat Dobl surrounds driver and passengers with technology that increases comfort and help keep the driver to focus on the road: this includes an automatic climate control system with distribution to rear seats, an MP3 stereo with controls on the steering wheel, cruise control, parking sensors, a built-in Blue&Me hands-free system and a "Blue&Me-TomTom" navigation system. The latter is a fully integrated infotainment system whose practical colour touch-screen allows you to manage phone calls, satellite navigation and all the driving information you need. The device is the result of a partnership between Fiat Group Automobiles and TomTom, the European leader in portable navigation systems, and integrates with the vehicle using the Blue&Me system developed with Magneti Marelli.
The system is operated from controls on the steering wheel and by voice commands. An exclusive "Car Menu" displays information on the car and all connected devices:
* all trip information on a single screen: distance travelled, consumption and range;
* fuel reserve warning and directions to the nearest filling station;
* places of interest, Fiat Group service centres and methane LPG filling stations;
* management of the mobile phone connected to Blue&Me: calls, information, contacts and call log;
* "eco:Drive Info": real-time information on your driving style and suggestions for reducing environmental impact and optimising consumption by changing gear and using the accelerator to suit the nature of the route.
